  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To assess the subclinical presence of mycoplasma and candida
  10.        in the oral cavity of HIV infected asymptomatic (non-AIDS) patients.
  11.        METHODS: Supra and subgingival plaque samples, hard and soft palate, and
  12.        dorsal tongue swabs were collected from 17 HIV(+) non-AIDS subjects and
  13.        10 HIV(-) controls. No subject presented with a history of fungal
  14.        infections or antifungal chemotherapy. In addition, none had taken
  15.        antibiotics within the past 60 days. Plaque samples were collected from
  16.        an inflamed site and diluted. Swabs were placed into PBS and mixed. All
  17.        specimens were inoculated onto selective and non-selective media and
  18.        incubated appropriately. Venous blood samples were obtained for
  19.        CBC/differential and CD4/CD8 profiles. Oral examinations were performed.
  20.        RESULTS: Candida were isolated from 41% of the HIV(+) subjects, with the
  21.        dorsum of the tongue most common. The HIV(-) control subjects were
  22.        culture negative for candida. Mycoplasma were isolated from 70% of the
  23.        HIV(+) plaque samples and 30% of the HIV(-). CONCLUSIONS: It appears
  24.        that subclinical presence of mycoplasma and candida is higher in
  25.        non-AIDS HIV(+) individuals than in HIV(-) individuals. This subclinical
  26.        presence may be site specific.
