AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the subclinical presence of mycoplasma and candida
in the oral cavity of HIV infected asymptomatic (non-AIDS) patients.
METHODS: Supra and subgingival plaque samples, hard and soft palate, and
dorsal tongue swabs were collected from 17 HIV(+) non-AIDS subjects and
10 HIV(-) controls. No subject presented with a history of fungal
infections or antifungal chemotherapy. In addition, none had taken
antibiotics within the past 60 days. Plaque samples were collected from
an inflamed site and diluted. Swabs were placed into PBS and mixed. All
specimens were inoculated onto selective and non-selective media and
incubated appropriately. Venous blood samples were obtained for
CBC/differential and CD4/CD8 profiles. Oral examinations were performed.
RESULTS: Candida were isolated from 41% of the HIV(+) subjects, with the
dorsum of the tongue most common. The HIV(-) control subjects were
culture negative for candida. Mycoplasma were isolated from 70% of the
HIV(+) plaque samples and 30% of the HIV(-). CONCLUSIONS: It appears
that subclinical presence of mycoplasma and candida is higher in
non-AIDS HIV(+) individuals than in HIV(-) individuals. This subclinical
presence may be site specific.
